CFMEU Queensland In Administration
On Friday, 23 August 2024, the Construction and General Division of the Construction, Forestry and Maritime Employees Union and all its branches – including Queensland, were placed into administration.
The Commonwealth Attorney-General, on Friday, determined a written scheme of administration, and the General Manager of the Fair Work Commission appointed Mr Mark Irving KC as the Administrator.
Over the weekend, moving vans were spotted at the union’s Queensland office, and we understand that the Administrator is in the process of obtaining control over cars, phones, Facebook, etc.
The past or outgoing Management conducted a rally in Brisbane today with multiple attacks on both the State and Federal ALP governments ‘Hands Off Our Union’.
We anticipate months of uncertainty, disruptions or forming, norming and storming as the industry resets to a new world. Now, what that new world looks like depends on additional government reforms, a genuine change to industry culture and productivity, and a willingness for union members to accept change.
As we understand it, the delegate and organiser structure remains, and it is clearly subject to change by the Administrator. We do not know what the ‘new normal business’ looks like for the CFMEU.
We anticipate the union will outsource some functions but continue to provide service to its membership.
In taking control of the union, the Government has caused a power shift within the industry, with contractors, builders and developers keeping a close eye on the developments from a safe distance. New alliances will be formed, old relationships may fade for three to five years, and thousands will feel unsettled.
The Government, who are looking for a long list of outcomes, including productivity, are clearly warming up for a second Act of change and the union’s attacks on the Commonwealth Government, the Prime Minister and the Workplace Relations Minister will see more changes before Christmas. The Minister this week clearly indicated the reforms may touch all parties, including employers, associations and more.
